Relationships are central to your health and wellbeing. Supportive relationships are fundamental to resilience and to buffering stress. Healthy relationships also correspond to decreased levels of trauma, increased effectiveness in the workplace, and higher functioning teams. For this reason, relational styles and levels of social support are key topics that we address in every conversation with humanitarian staff, whether they are newly deployed to the field or a seasoned professional managing others.
Humanitarian work impacts not only the workers but also their families. Family matters! This module will help the partners and families of humanitarian workers understand some of the stress associated with humanitarian work, how those pressures can also impact their lives, and how to better care for themselves and their important relationships.
For humanitarian staff that are constantly traveling, maintaining personal relationships can be a challenge. In this video, Dr. Jim Guy discusses the importance of sustaining these relationships while on deployment, and he includes some practicial ideas and next steps.
Many humanitarian staff are in different places around the world where disasters and critical incidents take place, and they have their families and children with them. How can aid workers talk to and help their children after these events? Watch this video with Dr. Rick Williamson for some great guidelines and practical tips.
Dr. J. Galen Buckwalter discusses the basics of resilience as emphasized by psychological and brain research.
