Responding to Challenging Times

At Headington Institute, we have been training individuals and teams on fostering resilience for more than 15 years. Naturally, our requests for consultation and training are often in response to specific disasters or an organization’s particular conflicts and challenges. In recent months, however, we have received training requests from humanitarian organizations that are seeking our help in navigating an increase in global uncertainties and challenges. They express concern about decreases in staff morale, organizational climate, and even personal safety. Everyone is trying to plan for funding cuts, but that is not all. The rise of nationalism is apparent in several regions worldwide, terrorist attacks in European cities are on the rise, and aid workers feel the inefficiencies and pessimism from protracted crises caused by longstanding political instability. The question that almost always accompanies “Can you help?” is “What low-cost options are there?” 

Headington Institute staff feel the strain of wanting to help more people quite personally. However, one of the “benefits” of challenging times is that it forces us to be more strategic as an organization and more committed to sustainability. As we help other development and emergency response organizations lean in to the fray, we will also do this ourselves. We are already seeing more requests for webinars and online training. We may seek more funding and opportunities for providing support pro bono. And most certainly, we will rely on a faithful and committed community for guidance and support.
