The Headington Institute offers a variety of training workshops and education materials.

Training Workshops

Understanding and coping with traumatic stress
This introductory workshop explores the different types of traumatic stress associated with humanitarian work (critical incident stress, vicarious trauma, and chronic stress) and self-care strategies effective in building personal hardiness and resilience.

Trauma and critical incident care
Many humanitarian workers become a target of violence or witness violence and its aftereffects. This workshop explains trauma reactions and how to best care for yourself and others after a traumatic event.

Understanding and coping with travel stress
Travel is a normal part of life for many humanitarian workers, but they are not protected from finding it stressful just because they are working for a good cause. This workshop explores the dynamics of the transitions that humanitarian work demands and coping strategies for dealing with travel stress.

Understanding and coping with vicarious trauma
Interaction with victims of disaster and violence places humanitarian workers at high risk of experiencing some form of secondary traumatic stress response. This workshop explains what vicarious trauma is, and coping strategies for dealing with it.

Humanitarian work, traumatic stress, and spirituality
It is almost impossible to do humanitarian work without it affecting your worldview, your source of strength and hope, and your sense of what is important. This workshop helps humanitarian workers explore how their career has impacted their spirituality and values, and how they can prepare to meet future spiritual challenges and grow from them.

Conflict resolution and communication skills in stressful environments
Some of the most significant challenges that humanitarian workers face in high-stress or crises environments relate to interpersonal conflict and other communication difficulties. This workshop explores our natural communication tendencies when we encounter potential conflict and strategies for communicating more effectively with others.

The power of the pen: Journaling as self-care
Writing about the facts and feelings associated with life’s challenges can result in measurable physical and psychological benefits. This workshop explores the process of journaling. and how writing can function as self-care.

*In addition to the workshops listed we can work with you to develop a program that suits your needs. Please feel free to contact us to discuss how we can best assist you.
